Maple Leafs at Canadiens: Five things to know

The oldest rivalry in the NHL resumes Saturday night when the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the Canadiens (7 p.m., CBC, TVA Sports, TSN-690 Radio). Here are five things you should know about this game:

The matchup: While the Canadiens have been atop the NHL standings since the first week of the season, the Leafs have crept to within a point of a playoff position after a 6-2 win over Nashville on Tuesday and a 6-1 win over Florida on Thursday. The Leafs have been dynamite at home (7-2-0), but they are 2-4-1 on the road and that includes a 2-1 loss at the Bell Centre on Oct. 29.

Price the difference: Carey Price, whose unbeaten streak over two seasons ended at 13 games Tuesday with an overtime loss to Florida, stopped 37 shots in that earlier win over Toronto. Price has a 10-0-1 record and ranks fourth in the NHL in goals-against average (1.63) and third in save percentage (.948). He and Boston’s Tuukka Rask share the lead in wins with 10 each.

Leafs need help on defence: The Maple Leafs have scored six goals in three of their last four games and are No. 5 in the NHL in scoring (3.29 goals per game). They have to score because they rank 28th in defence (3.35 GPG). The Leafs were hoping Frederik Andersen would solve their goaltending woes, but he’s backing up a suspect defence and has a 3.16 GAA and a .907 save percentage.

That Matthews boy: Auston Matthews scored four goals in his first NHL games, but the No. 1 overall in the June draft has cooled off since that spectacular debut. He has six goals and six assists on the season along with a minus-4 rating, but he has gone 11 games without a goal and has only one assist in that stretch.

Getting healthier: The Canadiens are hoping that Alexander Radulov has recovered from what ails him and that he will be back on the No. 1 line after missing two games with the flu. Finnish rookie Artturi Lehkonen will miss another game with an upper-body injury but he’s skating and should be back next week.
