This classic cocktail was invented in Paris during World War I. Its name is derived from the cocktail’s surprising kick, similar to the 75-mm guns the French Army used in the field. It’s great as a brunch cocktail or as an aperitif before dinner. This recipe is from Schiller’s Liquor Bar in New York City.

    Ingredients:

    • 1 fl. oz. (30 ml) dry gin
    • 1/2 fl. oz. (15 ml) Simple Syrup
    • 1/4 fl. oz. (8 ml) fresh lemon juice
    • Ice as needed
    • 3 fl. oz. (90 ml) Champagne
    • 1 lemon twist for garnish

    Directions:

Pour the gin, simple syrup and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker with ice.

Shake well for 15 to 20 seconds and strain into a chilled Champagne flute.

Top with the Champagne and garnish with a lemon twist. Serves 1.
