Friday January 6 - Vancouver Canucks vs. Calgary Flames - 7 p.m. - Sportsnet Pacific

Vancouver Canucks: 40 GP, 19-18-3, 41 pts, sixth in Pacific Division
Calgary Flames: 40 GP, 21-17-2, 44 pts, fourth in Pacific Division

The Columbus Blue Jackets' winning streak crashed to an end last night at 16 games, one shy of tying the all-time record, after a 5-0 loss to the determined Washington Capitals.

I mention this because the team that now holds the longest current winning streak in the league—is the Vancouver Canucks!

The Canucks' five-game streak started on December 28 against Los Angeles. Over the course of those five games, the Canucks have outscored their opposition 13-9 and are now pressing for a Western Conference playoff spot. After Thursday's games, the Canucks are tied with Nashville and Winnipeg at 41 points. That's one point behind Los Angeles, in the second wild-card spot, and three behind Calgary in the first wild-card spot.

There's always plenty of emotion when the Canucks and Flames get together. The teams have a long, dramatic playoff history against each other; they were the two clubs involved in the 2014 line brawl that led to the infamous moment when coach John Tortorella tried to storm the Flames' dressing room to go after then-coach Bob Hartley. And they played an intense, emotional six-game playoff series in Willie Desjardins' first year with the Canucks in 2015, which the Flames ended up winning in six games.

This year, we've got former Vancouver assistant Glen Gulutzan manning the Flames bench. And we've seen two interesting games so far—a 2-1 come-from-behind shootout win for Vancouver in their season opener back on October 15 and a 4-1 win for the Flames right before Christmas, when the Canucks turned in one of their worst performances of the season and managed just 14 shots on goal.

The Canucks, of course, also have a couple of ex-Flames in their lineup. Markus Granlund has been quiet during the winning streak—he hasn't recorded a point since scoring against Winnipeg back on December 22—but Sven Baertschi has been on fire!

Iain MacIntyre has a good feature on Baertschi in The Province today, going back to his struggles in the Flames organization and how he found some inner peace during his time in the minors by taking pencil to paper and doing sketches.

"Usually Baertschi practises graffiti — an art form he learned from his snowboarding brother, Kevin — or a still life from inside his home," MacIntyre reports. "He takes a sketch pad and pencils on long road trips. Baertschi draws to relax, to clear his mind of hockey, to purge the worry and mental baggage that so encumbered him when he seemed constantly out of favour with the Flames and shuttled between Calgary and its farm team, which until 2014 was in Abbotsford."

Baertschi's also the latest player to be featured in the Canucks' "King of the Rink." We know he's tight with his linemate Bo Horvat—they often post pictures on social media of being out together with their dogs, and did a helicopter adventure together over Christmas. MacIntyre says Baertschi's also close to his fellow Swiss native, Luca Sbisa. But he proves to be a bit of an enigma when Joey Kenward asks those two, and Brendan Gaunce, how much they know about how Baertschi's mind operates.

Baertschi's playing the best hockey of his career—currently tied with Daniel Sedin for third in team scoring with 23 points and second on the team behind Sbisa in plus-minus at a plus-4. After a slow start that saw him get just two points in nine games in October, he's now on pace for 23 goals and 49 points—which would destroy his previous career high of 15 goals and 28 points from last season.

Though he came to the Canucks with a reputation for being a perimeter player, this season's data is showing that Baertschi's actually making things happen around the net when he's on the ice at even strength.
