NFL Mailbag: Wild-card, Vacancies, and Bienvenidos a Miami

Who wins on wild-card weekend? -Bobby P. (Mansfield, LA)
Four nationally televised games take place this weekend and all provide something to watch. Oakland and Houston to see what happens with a third-string quarterback and a $72 million one that has been almost as ineffective. Detroit and Seattle for the fact that the Lions could win their first playoff game in 25 years, except that even with their injuries the Seahawks are at home.
Sunday has rookie head coaches taking on veterans in both divisions as Miami’s Adam Gase faces Mike Tomlin and Pittsburgh. Following, Ben McAdoo’s Giants travel to Green Bay for a game against Mike McCarthy and the Packers.
Who wins? I’m taking the Texans, Seahawks, Steelers, and Packers.
What do you make of the [New York] Giants’ receivers going to Miami? -Harry C. (Westbury, NY)
If you haven’t seen the picture of Odell Beckham Jr. and his fellow Giants’ receivers on a boat in Miami then here you go.

The fallout from the picture has ranged from outrage to nonchalance but regardless here are the facts. The Giants had an off day and the guys didn’t miss any required meetings or preparation for the upcoming game. In fact, all were back in time for practice.
They have the means to celebrate a victory in South Beach and chose to do so within the parameters of the team rules. These are grown men knowing they are responsible for their actions and though the public persona may be questionable, if no team rules were broken then the opinion of those outside the organization mean nothing.

Of the six current openings [Buffalo, Denver, San Diego, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, San Francisco], which is the most attractive? -Daryl S. (Collinsville, IL)
Based on an ability to win now with a current roster and possible additions through the 2017 draft, the best opening lies in Denver. Coach Gary Kubiak’s retirement opens the door for an individual to take the reigns of a franchise only two seasons removed from a Super Bowl victory.
Denver boasts an already potent defense and some intrigue on offense. The right individual here could challenge both Kansas City and Oakland for a return to the top of the AFC West division.

If not for the uncertainty surrounding the future of the San Diego Chargers franchise their unit poses a similar situation with a franchise quarterback already in place. However, managing both a relocation and possible rebranding effort could be difficult to balance as the new head coach attempts to win football games.
