Iraqi president says Trump’s entry ban not in line with Iraq’s contributions against ISIS

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Iraqi President Fuad Masum said US President Donald Trump’s travel ban for Iraqis “shocked us” and called on Washington to review its decision during a wide-ranging, question-and-answer session with journalists in Baghdad on Wednesday.
“Mr. Trump’s decree shocked us, as they put the name of Iraq alongside other states whose citizens are barred from entering the United States,” Masum said.
Masum added that Trump’s decision is not in line with the contributions Iraqis make to protect the world from terror as they are fighting on behalf of the world.
Last week, Trump signed an executive order putting in place a temporary ban on admission to the US for most nationals of seven Muslim-majority nations, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
On Monday, the Iraqi parliament voted to retaliate against the US travel ban on its citizens and called on the government to “respond in-kind to the United States,” establish channels of communication with the US congress regarding the issue, and call on the US administration to review its decision.
But, Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi did not act on parliament’s recommendation to respond in-kind to the US travel ban on Iraqi nationals, stressing the need to maintain good relations during the ongoing war with ISIS.
“We will do nothing of the sort,” Abadi said on Tuesday regarding the recommendation. “We are studying the decision but we are in a battle and we don’t want to harm the national interest.”
Abadi said that his government has been in contact with US officials on the travel ban and that Washington had pledged to review its decision as it pertains to Iraqi nationals, a ban that Abadi described as an insult.
The US is a key economic and military ally of Iraqi and Kurdish forces coordinating in the fight against ISIS. More than 5,000 US troops are in Iraq providing advice and training as well as air and ground support as part of the US-led international anti-ISIS coalition.
