The Edmonton Oilers played an almost perfect road game last night, their only problem was that the Nashville Predators played a little more perfect home game. Nashville’s 2-0 shutout featured outstanding goaltending, timely scoring and rock solid defense that bottled up the high-powered Edmonton offense to the point of frustration. The Oilers only made a few mistakes, and the Preds made them pay for two of them.

A costly turnover early in the second period, coupled with an outstanding pass from Ryan Johansen and a nasty wrister from Viktor Arvidsson led to the first goal just about 90 seconds in to the frame. The second period was bookended nicely by another outstanding play keyed by a forced turnover by Johansen, a couple of sweet passes and Johansen finishing the play into a gaping net.

That is when Pekka Rinne took over. The big Fin was simply amazing last night… after barely being challenged in the first period, the Oilers only generated four shots on goal, Rinne turned aside 27 shots in the last two periods including a particularly stunning three point blank save combo early in the second period.

Oscar Klefbom is still muttering to himself after this…

Honestly, the entire Oilers team probably see Rinne in their nightmares as he is 8-0-0 in his last eight starts against the Oil, with three shutouts. Oh yeah… I did mention rock solid defense, particularly a breakup of a 2 on 1 by Matt Irwin. This blueline is finally gelling and really playing with some passion and fire and the pending return of Roman Josi will do nothing but help this team.

Detroit is in town Saturday night, my understanding is that the game is completely sold out except for the normal day of game tickets.

With the trade deadline drawing closer, I thought I’d put on my GM hat and take a look at what Nashville needs heading into the later portions of this season. This is a difficult topic, because this team has been hard to judge as it has really only played a couple of games as the roster was originally constructed. They have lost almost 160 man-games to injury and have played/dressed more different players than any other team in the league this season. But I won’t let that stop me.

Given the rumors and news that have been swirling around Predators center Mike Ribeiro, a source in Montreal has reported that Ribeiro has asked for a trade… the obvious choice might be someone up the middle. Which, of course., leads the discussion to Matt Duchene, but if the asking price from Colorado is truly a “current player, a top prospect plus a 1st and a 2nd” ???? That price is WAAAAAAY too steep… that being said, a little more depth in the middle would be a nice add.

Usually I would say that a little more veteran support on the blueline would be nice as well, but at this point… I am not sure the Predators need it. They have survived the loss of Roiman Josi rather well, along with the other blueliners that have spent time on the IR. So… unless the right deal comes along, I stand pat on defense and obviously this team is just fine between the pipes.

So, to summarize… depth at center, the normal trade deadline “a little more scoring” are my incredibly obvious assessment of the Nashville needs… And, of course, I reserve the right to change this in case of injury.

    Random Notes

    - Where We Stand – After last night’s play, the Nashville Predators have 58 points in 51 games played and stand 3rd in the Central Division. Nashville trails the division leading Minnesota Wild by 13 points (-1 GIH) and 2nd place Chicago by 9 points with two games in hand. Nashville leads 4th place St. Louis by three points. Los Angeles is in the first wild card slot, the Blues are in the second.

    - Ryan Johansen is quietly putting together a nice season, last night was another excellent game from the center.

    - That top line of Johansen, Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson has been stellar.

    - It does appear that the Mike Ribeiro era in Nashville may be over… at least for now. Recent healthy scratches, a less than ringing endorsement from the head coach and now reports of a trade request. There is a single source reporting the trade request, a Montreal based freelance sports reporter.

    - Five games in the NHL tonight, all times CST – 6pm – CBJ @ PIT. 6:30pm – NYI @ DET, ANA @ FLA, CGY @ NJD, EDM @ CAR.
