Algae bloom responsible for killing 170,000 salmon in Chile a year after an algae bloom killed up to 20 percent of Chile's farmed salmon 25 million fish Posted: 11 Feb 2017 01:42 AM PST Photo World Fishing & Aquaculture An algae bloom killed some 170,000 salmon in recent days in Chile, the world's second-biggest exporter of the fish after Norway, as they were being transported by boat, raising concern about an industry that was devastated by an outbreak last year. The current algae outbreak is not located near any of the salmon farms that dot southern Chile's coastline but has infested sections of the shipping lanes used by producers, the government's fisheries Sernapesca body told Reuters on Thursday. Harmful algae blooms happen when the normally occurring aquatic plants grow out of control and produce toxic effects on fish. Live fish being transported by local producers Australis Seafoods and Nova Austral were infected and killed earlier this month. The boats, which recirculate ocean water into the tanks to keep the fish alive as they are transported, inadvertently passed through the infested waters, Sernapesca said. "Warm weather and little rain were some of the reasons for the algae bloom last year, and Chile has experienced some of the same weather this year," broker Pareto said. Last year, an algal bloom killed up to 20 percent of Chile's farmed salmon, some 25 million fish, pushing prices higher globally. Part of the fish being transported were headed for harvest and others were tiny smelts that were going from fresh water to cages in the ocean. A flyover on Wednesday by Chile's navy and Sernapesca could not visually locate the algae bloom, which has a distinctive color, the government body said. Home |
Many feared dead "scene from a horror movie" as high rise building collapsed after fire in downtown Tehran Iran Posted: 11 Feb 2017 12:39 AM PST Photo NBC News At least 75 people, including 45 firefighters, were injured when a blazing high-rise commercial building in downtown Tehran collapsed, Iranian state television reported on Thursday. One witness described the 17-storey tower's collapse as like a "scene from a horror movie". Meanwhile, other Iranian media reports suggested that over 30 firefighters had been trapped and were feared dead. Rescue teams were at the scene, state TV said. Everyone else had been evacuated from the building, state TV said, but firefighters were still trying to control the blaze and police have cordoned off the area. "The building is one of the oldest buildings in Tehran. The Plasco building is a very old building in southern Tehran. It is mostly a commercial building," state TV said, referring to the Plasco Building, which is more than 50 years old. Photo India Live Today "At least 45 firefighters are among the injured ones. All of the injured people were sent to hospitals. Most of them have been discharged," state TV reported. The semi-official Tasnim news agency said the Plasco building "had caught fire in the past". "The fire started on the ninth floor ... The fire is almost under the control now," Tasnim reported. A grocery shop owner, forced by police to leave the area, told Reuters by telephone that "it was like a horror movie. The building collapsed in front of me." The semi-official Fars news agency said police have cordoned off British and Turkish embassies that are located near the Plasco building. "The flames could be seen kilometers away from the old building ... but most of the residents and shopkeepers in the building have been evacuated," the semi-official Fars news agency reported. "The fire started around 8 a.m. (0430 GMT) local time when many shopkeepers were not inside the building," it said. Home |
Heat records tumble as Sydney records it's hottest summer in 158 year recorded history as heatwave from hell continues Posted: 10 Feb 2017 08:35 AM PST Photo The Straits Times New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and parts of Victoria are currently in the grips of a heatwave from hell with temperatures hitting the high 40’s. It is now officially the hottest summer in Sydney’s 158 year recorded history — with 10 summer days over 35C, according to BOM, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology. Temperatures today soared to 44.5C in Penrith and other parts of Sydney’s west and as high as 47C at Ivanhoe Airport, in lower western NSW as people are warned to stay indoors or by the pool. The Bureau of Meteorology has reported the hottest February day on record at Sydney Airport today. It has broken the previous record of 42.6C, set on February 21, 1980. A state-wide fire ban has been declared for NSW with catastrophic conditions expected on Sunday in the state’s central west, across the tablelands to the Hunter region and out to the coast. The Hunter region will receive the brunt of the extreme heat with Singleton and Cessnock topping the predicted temperatures with 46C on Saturday and 43C on Sunday. Western Sydney reached 44C on Friday with the city forecast for a cooler 38C. The western Riverina town of Hay reached 47C, reported news.com.au. Home |
A mag 6.5 - 10km NNE of Mabua, Philippines is the second major quake of February and the 9th of 2017. Posted: 10 Feb 2017 07:02 AM PST USGS There is No Tsunami Warning, Advisory, Watch, or Threat in effect. A shallow magnitude 6.5 - 10km NNE of Mabua, Philippines is the second major quake of February and the 9th of 2017. 146 Major quakes shook our planet in the year 2016 a slightly below average year this centuryA total number of 146 major quakes was registered on our planet in the year 2016 see here below. The biggest of these was the mag 7.9 - Papua New Guinea in the middle of December a week earlier a mag 7.8 hit the Solomon Isles, in November a mag 7.8 struck New Zealand, in April a mag 7.8 shook Ecuador. And in March another mag 7.8 struck Indonesia. Below all the major quakes to strike this year [img(640.3333339999999px,350.33333400000004px)]https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P0shDsk5HEM/WGudaCwDKVI/AAAAAAAAgk8/B3DzQ9lmGkItMNsQV6E50WyjO2E8vNi5gCLcB/s640/sadfsdfgffrffsvgfgfsdfffdfgagfddsfasdfsdfsd.jpg[/img] Major Quakes per year since 2000 Major quakes from 1900 to 2015 has seen an increase of 450% although somehow major quakes over mag 6.9, have remained remarkably stable since the same period, see below. I receive many comments on The Big Wobble claiming major quakes are on the rise. Since the year 2000 major quakes have remained quite consistent in numbers. I have broken down all major quakes since the 2000 and put each category onto the same graph, (see above) Apart from 2007 which recorded 196 major quakes and 2011 which recorded a record 207 major quakes, 81 of these being in the Japan area, the chart is remarkably similar. The biggest quake to rock the earth was a mag 9.1 off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. This was the third largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and is the largest since the 1964 Prince William Sound, Alaska earthquake. In total, 227,898 people were killed or were missing and presumed dead and about 1.7 million people were displaced by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 14 countries in South Asia and East Africa. The only other mag 9.0 earthquake in this time period was the 2011 quake near the east coast of Honshu, Japan. At least 15,703 people killed, 4,647 missing, 5,314 injured, 130,927 displaced and at least 332,395 buildings, 2,126 roads, 56 bridges and 26 railways destroyed or damaged by the earthquake and tsunami along the entire east coast of Honshu from Chiba to Aomori. The majority of casualties and damage occurred in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima from a Pacific-wide tsunami with a maximum runup height of 37.88 m at Miyako. The total economic loss in Japan was estimated at 309 billion US dollars. Electricity, gas and water supplies, telecommunications and railway service disrupted and several reactors severely damaged at a nuclear power plant near Okuma. Several fires occurred in Chiba and Miyagi. At least 1,800 houses destroyed when a dam failed in Fukushima. The Fukushima nuclear plant is still trying to stop nuclear material leaking into the sea and atmosphere five years after the disaster. Home |
