Earlier today, a group of Black Lives Matter protesters attempted to block Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos from entering Jefferson Middle School in DC.
However, as a tweet from the President of the Near Southeast Community Partners Association reveals, DeVos still managed to make her way into the school to meet with Chancellor Antwan Wilson.
As the Washington Post reports, DeVos managed to gain access to the school by utilizing the clever trick of using another door. As Twitchy highlights, this did not sit well with one of the protesters.
DeVos later released a statement from the Department of Education’s website about her run in with the protesters, saying that she will not be deterred by them.
“I thank D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Antwan Wilson, Jefferson Middle School Academy Principal Greg Dohmann, Superintendent Natalie Gordon and a tremendous team of administrators, teachers and students for welcoming me to Jefferson Middle School Academy today. Jefferson Academy is a public middle school on the rise and a great example of the successful collaborative innovations occurring within the D.C. Public Schools system.
“Focusing on their students and families is at the heart of Jefferson Academy’s approach, and that’s exactly what I believe is at the heart of providing an exceptional education. Great teachers and leaders help make great schools, and I was honored to speak with Jefferson’s team about our shared commitment to strengthening public education.
“I respect peaceful protest, and I will not be deterred in executing the vital mission of the Department of Education. No school door in America will be blocked from those seeking to help our nation’s school children.”
DC police are now investigating as to whether or not DeVos had been assaulted during her visit to Jefferson Middle School, according to the DC Police Department’s Twitter account. Currently, one arrest has already been made as one of the protesters had assaulted a police officer.
