Ways you take the Lord's name in vain Empty Ways you take the Lord's name in vain

    Exodus 20:7
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain."

I was reading this section, one that many of us are familiar with, and it really hit me in a new way. Back in the day misusing the Lord's name was more than just an accidental slip of the word itself. It was tied to oaths, testimonies, allegiance to, and a little more. The command had more to do with our lives than just the words that came out of our mouths. In fact, let me just get down to it. When our words would say, Yeah I am a Christian, checked the boxes, prayed the prayer, and all of that stuff, but our lives in action do not reflect the character of God or His will then we are taking His name in vain……….

    Wait,…what?

Yeah, we think of the big 10 and this one we breeze on by thinking I just won't say bad words that start with God, or use Jesus' name lightly, but the problem with that is that legalistic adherence doesn’t cover heart issues. We break this by the way we live our lives. We break this by the way we fail to love the unlovable. We break this by trying to look like we have it all together but one of the most beautiful aspects of the Gospel is Jesus at work in our flaws and failures. We can be transparent and see Him magnified in the work of His hands in the middle of our messes. But God have mercy on us when we think we can claim His Holy Name and live lives so contrary to His character. MY GOD PLEASE FORGIVE ME FOR THE TIMES I HAVE DONE THIS. Help me. I want my life to be true to Your will and character. May I always live true to Your character and may I never again take Your name so lightly.
