After the lost opportunity in Pittsburgh the Jets have bounced back with strong games against both Montreal and Ottawa on back-to-back nights. The results have been 5 points in 3 games with an opportunity for 2 more against Toronto this week.

The Jets played a 'heavy game' against Pittsburgh (points for classic use of Claude Noel-ism there) and brought that intensity to the game on Saturday against the Canadiens and again yesterday against the Senators.

What was the difference between these games and the one against Pittsburgh or any of the previous losses in the home stand? It's hard to say with certainty, at least as a direct explanation as to why there were better results.

The play of Connor Hellebuyck certainly helped posting a .950 and .941 in the two games in Canada versus his .894 in Pittsburgh. But something else seemed different, at least to these eyes, with the Jets. I'm not going to pull some narrative out of the Pittsburgh game where by competing and nearly beating them gave the Jets a sense of confidence, they are 4-1 against the Blackhawks this year and that confidence never stuck around.

Before we go further do you want to debate the NHL DPOS decision to review Trouba’s hit and not Malkin’s? Me either. It’s pretty simple in my eyes, if you may have hit the head review the damn play on the ice at the time and make a call then. Secondly, if you do hit the head you always get a hearing and some sort of discipline. That’s if you want players to be careful with that part of the body. As was said many times yesterday on social media no one knows what the DPOS is trying to make safe anymore. So what's your guess, I'm saying 2 games.

    Now onto the Jets.

Is it a quiet resignation that any post-season play is all but gone and it's time to get back to work? Seems odd, but as I said before something seems different.

So I took a look at some stats that might suggest a difference and that was the controversial stat of hits. Here’s what the conventional thinking about hitting can be: if you are hitting players you are likely chasing the play and having less possession of the puck. It’s one of those stats that makes people angry for two reasons: the possible lack of puck awareness and the idea that you’re trailing the play so all you do is hit and pray.

In the last three games the Jets have had hit totals of 30-Ott, 48-Mtl, 49-Pitt. In fact the games against Montreal and Pittsburgh were the highest hit totals by any team in any game since February 1st 2017. Looking at the season here is how the team breaks down:

    9-10-2 for 20 points in 21 games

    >25 Hits in a game

    19-19-3 for 41 points in 41 games

That’s not a convincing argument to throw hits for this team but what if it helped generate shots?

    12 games in 21

    >25 hits in a game with 30 or more shots

    20 games in 41

That might suggest that when the Jets play a more physical game they generate more shots but let’s drop the threshold to 25 shots in a game.

    17/21

    >25 hits in a game with 25 or more shots

    32 games in 41

Again this would suggest that generating shots due to hitting happens a bit more at at the 30 and over threshold but evens out in favour of less hitting when that threshold is set at 25 shots in a game.

We could go on and on with this using scoring chances, shot locations and other metrics too. I simply do not have the time nor the tools to do this efficiently and I’d likely screw it up too.

However, this might be a worthwhile thing for some one far more efficient than myself to look into. The problem being here is that hits are so randomly recorded throughout the league depending on venue.

That being said, I think there is a reason to believe that Jets head coach is trying to play certain teams in a certain way when it comes to physical play. At least that’s my theory and part of that theory is it presents a problem for the players. That problems goes back to identity, are the Jets a physical team designed to punish or a skill team designed to control possession and use their speed? In my opinion it’s not like changing a boxer from a southpaw to a righty and then switching back like Rocky did in Rocky 2.

For example the Penguins, the latest Jets measuring stick, have 25 or more hits in 30 of their 58 games. Are they not the model most teams want to follow? What about the big bad Ducks? They have 34 games with 25 or more hits in 60 played. The Central Division rival Blackhawks have just 4 games with over 25 hits in 59 games. The old school Tortorella Blue Jackets have 9 games in 58 with 25 or more hits.

Using the same time frame from last season the Jets had 29 of 57 games with over 25 hits and an 11-16-2 record. Basically the idea that the team is better when playing physically (if hits are an indication of that) is simply not true, or needs far more data points to explore.

That being said, the last three games have seen the Jets compete hard and perhaps hits are just a short term example of that level of competition. It’s something fans appreciate and if it continues with the same results I don’t think anyone is going to care. Is it sustainable? We’re going to find out as the season winds down and perhaps a trend emerges.
