LONDON (Reuters) - Scotland's Prime Minister Nicola Stirgen said on Thursday she had officially asked the British government to "hold a second referendum on independence" two days after the UK's exit from the EU began.
The leader of the Scottish National Party sent a letter to British Prime Minister Theresa May confirming that "the Scottish people should have the right to choose their own future."
On Tuesday, the Scottish parliament approved a prime minister's request to submit a formal request from the British government for a new referendum on independence from the United Kingdom.
Parliament voted 69 to 59 in favor of the move, ignoring the request of British Prime Minister Teresa Mae, who met Monday with Stirgen.
Stirgen pressed for a referendum in the second half of 2018 or the first half of 2019, before Britain withdrew from the EU, but Mai told her: "Now is not the right time."
Scottish voters had rejected independence in the 2014 referendum, but Stirgen said Britain's decision to leave the EU was a "fundamental flaw."
In her opinion, the Scots, who also refused to withdraw from the European Union in the referendum, which had the opposite effect of their will, would vote "yes" to the independence of their country.
