“It’s not too late” to fire James Comey: President Trump hints he may still boot FBI director
Asked in a Tuesday interview on Fox Business Network if it was too late to ask FBI Director James Comey to resign, the president responded, “No, it’s not too late.”
The FBI is currently conducting an investigation into possible coordination between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russian state actors. Earlier this month, Financial Times reported that the FBI was planning on creating a special unit based in Washington that would “surge resources” and give Comey greater visibility into the investigation’s granular details. The creation of a special unit indicated to many that the FBI was handling this matter seriously.
Comey also testified to Congress last month that the FBI had no evidence to substantiate the president’s claims that he was wiretapped by his predecessor.
Trump, for whatever it’s worth, added during the Fox Business interview that he still has confidence in the FBI director. “We will see what happens. It’s going to be interesting,” Trump said of Comey’s tenure. Then, unprompted, Trump went on a little tirade about Comey’s investigation into Hillary Clinton and the decision not to bring a criminal case against her.
“Don’t forget, when Jim Comey came out, he saved Hillary Clinton,” Trump said. “People don’t realize that. He saved her life. I call it ‘Comey 1’ and I joke about it a little bit. When he was reading those charges, she was guilty of every charge. Then, he said that she was intentionally okay,” he said.
“Director Comey was very, very good to Hillary Clinton. That I can tell you. If he weren’t, she would be, right now, going to trial.”
Still, despite Trump’s disappointment, it sounds as if Comey is not on the hot seat just yet.”I want to give everybody a good, fair chance,” Trump said during the interview.
