China's official Xinhua news agency reported a press error that could have led to a world war.
The agency said North Korea "fired" a missile during its celebration of the Sun, Saturday, while it was meant that Pyongyang had "reviewed" the missile only.
With the escalating tension between North Korea and the United States recently, and mutual threats between the two countries of the possibility of attacks, the title could have served as a catalyst for war.
US media outlets, including Bloomberg, quoted Xinhua as saying it had fired a North Korean missile.
But what happened was just a parade of missiles loaded into trucks, part of a parade in North Korea to celebrate the sun.
The Chinese agency quickly misjudged and reformed it, followed by the American media, including Bloomberg.
North Korea offered what appeared to be new long-range and submarine-launched missiles on the day of the sun, which marks the 105th anniversary of the birth of the country's founder, Kim Il-sung.
The US missile attack on a Syrian air base this month raised questions about US President Donald Trump's plans for North Korea, which has conducted several missile and nuclear tests in defiance of UN sanctions.
Washington has warned that the policy of "strategic patience" with North Korea has ended. Ending 29/34 R.
