    American Petroleum Institute data showed Wednesday that crude oil inventories in the United States fell last week, with increased production of refineries, while gasoline inventories rose and distillate stocks fell.

    Crude stocks fell by 840 thousand barrels in the week ending April 14 to 531.6 million barrels, while analysts' forecasts indicate a decline by 1.5 million barrels.

    The Petroleum Institute said crude inventories at the delivery point in Cushing, Oklahoma, fell 672 thousand barrels.

    Gasoline stocks rose surprisingly by 1.4 million barrels last week while analysts forecast in a Reuters poll to fall 1.9 million barrels.

    It fell distillates, which include diesel and heating oil, 1.8 million barrels while it was expected to drop 988 thousand barrels.

    It increased US imports of crude oil last week by 97 thousand barrels per day to 7.85 million barrels per day.
