Russian President Vladimir Putin said only the Russian people would choose his successor through the election process
"Only the Russian people will choose the president's successor through democratic elections," Putin told a Kremlin meeting.
Russia will hold presidential elections in March next year. Putin did not say whether he would run or not but was widely expected to seek a new term.
Putin took the post of president of Russia for two terms (1999-2009), and returned after the 2012 elections, because of the Constitution, which prevents the presidency for more than two consecutive terms.
Putin, 65, holds a doctorate in economics and worked as an intelligence officer before the fall of the Soviet Union, an assistant to a university president. He also served as prime minister for three years 2009-2012.
