Chinese President Xi Jinping has told US President Donald Trump that he hopes all sides will show restraint on North Korea.
State media said Monday that during a conversation with Trump, Xi Jinping revealed that China opposes anything that contravenes UN Security Council resolutions.
Xi said all parties should avoid doing anything that would increase tensions.
This comes at a time when the North Korean army said on Sunday it would destroy the United States "mercilessly" if Washington decided to attack his country.
"Our reaction to the United States and its naval forces will be so cruel that the aggressors will not have the chance to survive," the official Korean Central News Agency quoted the military as saying in a statement.
This came after a combat group led by a US aircraft carrier to the region, amid fears that Pyongyang could conduct a sixth nuclear test.
