Arab League calls for the Red Cross to intervene to end the suffering of Palestinian prisoners



UN Secretary - General of the Arab League , Ahmed Aboul Gheit , the International Committee of the Red Cross ( ICRC ) to intervene with the Israeli authorities to stop the 'excesses' against the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Aboul Gheit sent a letter to the head of the Red Cross Peter Maurer asked him to urgently intervene with the Israeli authorities to stop the 'excesses' against the Palestinian prisoners.

The letter comes after the 1500 Palestinian prisoners began ten days ago on a hunger strike collectively to demand better prison conditions and at the invitation of the leader of the Fatah movement , Marwan Barghouti , sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to the statement of the Arab League message that Abu Algueta comes within the framework of contacts conducted with a number of international parties in this regard.

The issue of detainees in Israel , one of the central issues in the Palestinian territories occupied since fifty years.

Palestinian officials say Israel has arrested more than 850 thousand Palestinians over the past fifty years.

In recent years, the number of prisoners on hunger strikes individually during which some of them nearing death, and ended with agreements with the Israeli authorities to release them. But some of them re - arrested afterwards.
