WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A leader of a militant group in Afghanistan may have been killed this week during an operation in the east of the country, in which two US soldiers were killed in circumstances still under investigation, the Pentagon said.
About 50 US soldiers and 40 Afghan Special Forces troops were flown in on Wednesday night near a headquarters of a militant organization in the eastern state of Nangarhar, used by Abdul Haseeb, who the Pentagon considers the leader of the militant group in Afghanistan, Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis said.
"Minutes after the landing, our joint forces came under intense fire from different directions and from well-equipped combat positions," a statement from US forces in Afghanistan said.
"Despite this, our forces successfully managed to hit the enemy and killed several high-ranking leaders from the Khorasan group and some 35 fighters," the statement said.
The compound is located near the tunnel area where US forces on April 13 threw "bombshells" - the most powerful non-nuclear bomb used by US forces in the fighting.
Pentagon officials believe Abdul Hasib was killed during the operation, but not confirmed until now, according to Davis.
"If confirmed, the death of Prince Abdul-Hasib and his followers will greatly affect the organization's operations in Afghanistan and will help us to achieve our goal of destroying it in 2017," said a statement by the US command in Afghanistan.
According to the same source, "many senior officials" in the organization of Daed and Khorasan community, its local branch, and "up to 35 fighters" were killed.
