UNESCO considers Jerusalem an occupied city "for Israel's sovereignty over it"

PARIS, May 2 (UPI) - The majority of countries participating in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have voted on Jerusalem as an occupied city and have no Israeli sovereignty over it.
According to Yedioth Ahronoth, 22 countries voted Tuesday in favor of the resolution, while 10 rejected it. Among the countries that rejected the draft resolution were the United States, Britain, Germany and Italy.
The draft resolution states that "the Old City of Jerusalem is purely Palestinian and has nothing to do with the Jews, with an emphasis on the history of the city and its cultural heritage associated with Muslims and Christians."
The draft resolution affirms that the Ibrahimi tombs and sanctuary in Hebron and Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem are purely Muslim tombs and sites.
The resolution allows the international organization to send a representative almost permanently to follow Israeli violations.
Israel tried hard to prevent the resolution, through coordination with America to pressure some countries, but failed to convince the majority of European countries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pre-empted UNESCO's decision by saying: "Israel does not recognize the international organization."
"Jerusalem is historically linked to the Jews, and there is no people in the world that considers Jerusalem a holy area like the Jewish people," Netanyahu was quoted as saying.
He added: "Jerusalem has always been the center and focus of the Jewish nation, we swear by UNESCO and raise the banner of our reality, which rejects that organization, which we do not recognize." Finished

Anger in Israel: "We must close the UNESCO headquarters in Jerusalem."

    Wed, 03 May 2017 08:13:01

Anger at the Israeli political system on the UNESCO resolution calling for the withdrawal of Israeli sovereignty over all of Jerusalem. The Israeli government will be put in a request to close the UNESCO headquarters in Jerusalem

Re Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday on UNESCO 's decision, claiming that Israel does not have the right to sovereignty over any part of Jerusalem. At the reception of a diplomatic delegation ceremony of the prime minister he said: "In the past few days, I had many talks with leaders of countries around the voting is illogical in the United Nations. This led to a decline in the number of countries that support UNESCO 's decision and reduced. A year ago supported the 32 - nation resolution, and by about half year supported by 26 countries, and the number of countries which is supported by now to 22 ".

Packer at the time, Netanyahu said, "There are no people in the world constitutes an important position of Jerusalem as his form for the Jewish people, although he held discussions in UNESCO is trying to refute this simple fact. We are opposed to UNESCO and support our reality of this."

Is expected to demand the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miri Regev (Likud), today (Wednesday) in the Cabinet session closes UNESCO headquarters in Jerusalem, and the transfer of ownership of the site to the state headquarters. "Over 50 years, is located Jerusalem under Israeli sovereignty, no need for observers from the United Nations," the minister Regev said, adding: "UNESCO has obtained the possibility of using the headquarters to monitor the cease-fire agreements concluded after the Six-Day War - the agreements are no longer Link".

Works today at the headquarters of the United Nations observers, who have set up headquarters after the Six - Day War, and the two agencies , two United Nations, including UNESCO , in addition to the Office of the United Nations envoy in the Middle East, Nikolay Mladenov. Now UNESCO 's decision to be subject to the forces of Jerusalem occupied, Regev requesting payment of a step forward to close its headquarters and has been given a proposal to support right - wing organizations.

He said Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon: "This decision is miserable, which seeks to undermine the relationship between Israel and Jerusalem will not change the fact that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people. Israel will not tolerate this shameful decision."

The Deputy Foreign Minister, Tzipi Hotobla (Jewish House), the resolution also said that "UNESCO" continues to distort history. It fims its political credibility as responsible for preserving the heritage and civilization, but fail to play its role again and again, when he is going to talk about Israel. "

The head of the opposition party, Yitzhak Herzog: "UNESCO's decision is a disgrace against Israel from anti-Semitism and anti-Israel through the distortion of the history of the Jewish people and his close relationship and the eternal Jerusalem. This decision and the bass insignificantly would not have a historical interest."

It voted yesterday (Tuesday), as mentioned above, the Member States on the resolution, which claims that Israel does not have the right to sovereignty over Jerusalem. Voted in 22 countries in favor, 10 countries voted against and 23 countries abstained from voting. Representatives of the three countries did not participate in the vote. A vote was taken at the height of Israel on the 69 independence.

Although the organization recognizes the sanctity of the city for the three religions, it is clear from the draft decision that there is overwhelming criticism about the Israeli archaeological activities in East Jerusalem and the Old City, which is considered these activities "are illegal under international law." It was also decided that it should be abolished Israeli laws that apply to the place and aims to change the character. Sweden was the only Western state that supported the resolution while opposed to the United States, Greece, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Britain. France, Spain, and India did not vote on the resolution.
