BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Thursday expressed a desire for a good relationship with its neighbor North Korea after the official news agency reported a rare criticism of articles published by Chinese state media calling for tougher sanctions on Pyongyang's nuclear program.
The United States called on North Korea's ally China to do more to curb Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs, which prompted the administration of President Donald Trump to take a firmer stance and warn that the "era of strategic patience" is over.
A commentary published by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) cited reference to articles published by the People's Daily and the Chinese Global Times, which they described as "well-known as media conveying the official position of the Chinese (ruling) party and the government."
In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said China's position was clear and clear.
"China's position on the development of friendly and good relations with North Korea is stable and clear," Geng told reporters when asked about the Korean agency's article.
The article, published by the Korean News Agency, accused Chinese articles of trying to blame Pyongyang for the "deterioration of relations" with China and the deployment of US defense systems in the region.
It also accused China of exaggerating the damage caused by North Korea's nuclear tests on three provinces in northeast China.
