ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani met with British PM’s special envoy for security affairs in Iraq Gen. Tom Beckett and the British ambassador to Iraq Frank Baker a day after the Kurdish Ministry of Peshmerga announced that it had met with British, US, and German military advisers to discuss the unification and reform of Kurdish forces.

The foreign delegation expressed its happiness to visit the Kurdistan Region and showed gratitude to the Ministry of Peshmerga for its assistance and facilitations for the international reform team within the Peshmerga ministry, according to a statement from the Kurdish prime ministry, which added that in their next meeting, the Kurdish Council of Ministers will discuss the team’s project.

The British delegation which included some British military officials reiterated their country’s intention to continue its military assistance for the Kurdistan Region, to the Kurdish PM.

Barzani recognized and thanked Britain for its continued assistance to the Kurdistan Region. He also showed appreciation to the international team for reform within the Ministry of Peshmerga. The team aims to help the Kurdistan Region in its endeavors to build a professional and contemporary force for the Peshmerga.

Barzani also said that there is good coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi army in the battle to free Mosul from ISIS terrorists, a coordination which has had very good results. He also stressed that it was necessary for Baghdad to think about building an inclusive political process for post-Mosul liberation so that people in the region can return home with confidence and live comfortably.

Barzani also reiterated that there will be dialogue with Baghdad in order to reach a suitable solution to the problems between Erbil and Baghdad.

Kurdish Deputy PM Qubad Talabani and acting Peshmerga Minister Karim Sinjari were also present for Tuesday’s meeting.

The British Special Envoy recognized the resilience and the great success which the Peshmerga forces have achieved in the fight against terrorism. He commended the cooperation and coordination between the Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi security forces in the fight to retake Mosul.

Additionally Beckett stressed the importance of having an inclusive political process in the region, side by side military operations, the statement detailed.

Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Ministry told Rudaw yesterday that a plan from the Coalition includes unifying all Peshmerga forces under the ministry.

“The Americans, German and British have promised us that not only do they make recommendations for change, they will also stay with us and help us implement every point of the plan,” Jabar Yawar said.
