Syrian government forces recapture Jirah Military Airbase east of Aleppo

Aleppo (SyriaNews.media) Syrian government forces managed, on Saturday, to recapture Jirah (Jarrah) Military Airbase, in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, after two months of fierce battles with the Islamic State group, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

Head of SOHR Ramy Abdel Rahman said, the Syrian government forces recaptured al-Jirah (Jarrah) Military Airbase, in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, after violent battles, while added that the majority of militants withdrew from the area.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Syrian government forces, backed by Russian forces, started an extensive assault in January 2017, and managed to drive out militants from more than 170 villages and cities.

In 7 January, Syrian government forces arrived in the outskirts of al-Jirah Military Airbase, and engaged in violent battles, accompanied by air strikes, with the terrorist group.

“The airbase suffered great material losses due to the violent air strikes,” Abdel Rahman explained.

Noteworthy, al-Jirah Airbase was captured by opposition fighters from Ahrar al-Sham and the Free Syrian Army on 12 February, then it fell under the Islamic State control in January 2014.
