Who could the Jets target as a UFA FWD

In the last blog the idea was presented that the Jets could or could not use UFA help in the forward group. The general consensus from the Twitter poll I ran was in favour of ‘yes’!

So operating on the popular vote who would make sense for the Jets?

Consider that the expansion draft will have an affect on who the Jets may target given on who they lose. Looking at the roster, the most likely loss could be one of Lowry, Copp, or Dano. That’s three centres or wingers depending on usage.

The Jets have done this before with aging veterans with 2 year deals to Olli Jokinen and Drew Stafford. So using that as a road map let’s assume that the Jets will look at that 31-34 age range knowing that 35 and over on a deal longer than one year has a potential retirement liability.

This takes out all the guys like Thornton, Marleau, Sharp, Williams, FIddler, Vrbata, Cullen and more. So who does it include?

    TJ Oshie- not a chance.
Vanek- probably unlikely but if he fits the model
Bonino- now if the Penguins win the cup or miss the final he may be deemed expendable for cap reasons
Stalberg- He would seem to fit the Jets model based on history.
Eaves- he would be ideal but some one will overpay and for a good and desperation
Versteeg- he would be great to not scoring on the Jets all the time
Gagner- he would be ideal as he is still only 27 and seems to have some odd bias against him from GMs
Ryan (Derek) he is some one who is unlikely to come to mind but 11 goals and 18 assists might be worth a Shawn Matthias project risk.

In some ways this is not much of a UFA class if you are the Jets as they are not going to land an Oshie despite him fitting their historical model. That being said their are a couple of interesting options and if there was to be a short list it might look like this: (in no order and with the caveat that no advanced stats have been considered)

    Stalberg
    Gagner
    Versteeg
    Bonino

Now whether this is something Chevy wants to do is another question. Furthermore is it something that the Jets need to do? The expansion draft will certainly dictate any move if on is to come but do the Jets feel the same way as the poll? That’s the big unknown and something that the Jets have some major decisions to make. This move, if it is to happen, is not about a placeholder but likely more of an insurance play. The gamble would be assuming Connor or Roslovic are ready for NHL prime time. If not do the Jets wait to address that problem then or does Chevy buy the insurance policy? Stay tuned because right now anything is possible.
