    BAGHDAD, Aug 22 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi parliament Thursday voted on a draft-law to regulate marine navigation in Khawr Abd Allah between Iraq and Kuwait.

    After the parliamentary session, a number of Iraqi MPs said that the agreement would protect the rights of the Iraqi people and regulate marine navigation between Iraq and Kuwait.

    On January 29th, the Iraqi government agreed to forward the draft-law to parliament for approval. On January 18th, the Iraqi parliament approved the second reading of the draft-law which was conducted by the parliament's foreign relations and legal committees.

    The agreement also included articles pertaining to the protection of the marine environment.

    A joint committee from governments of Iraq and Kuwait will organize and supervise marine navigation in the area.

    The agreement is based on United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of December 10th, 1982. It also came as an implementation of UNSC resolution 833 of 1993 in regards to the borders between Iraqi and Kuwait. (end) mhg.gta KUNA 221730 Aug 13NNNN
