Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Sunday elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as its new president, returning to the post he held for more than 10 years until August 2014, according to AFP.
Erdogan, who is his only candidate, took part in a special congress held by the ruling party, replacing Prime Minister Ben Ali Yildirim, on constitutional changes approved in the referendum on April 16 to expand his presidential powers.
Erdogan formally cut off his relationship with the Islamist party when he was elected president in August 2014, according to the constitution, but returned to the ranks of the party, which he co-founded in 2001 thanks to a first article in the constitutional amendment.
"I am going back today to my party, to my brother, to my love," he said at the party's return ceremony.
The return of Erdogan to the presidency of the party will allow the Turkish president to end internal differences and prepare for the upcoming legislative and presidential elections scheduled for November 3, 2019.
Erdogan was co-founder of the Justice and Development Party along with conservative figures including his predecessor Abdullah Gul, who did not rejoin the party after taking office between 2007 and 2014.
Erdogan's camp won a narrow margin on April 16 in a referendum on sweeping constitutional amendments that move Turkey into a presidential system, with 51.41 percent of the vote.
