The US military has successfully tested intercontinental ballistic missile intercepts in a first-of-its-kind test amid rising fears over the North's missile program.
It is the first time the US military has tested a interceptor missile against an intercontinental ballistic missile, the Missile Defense Agency said.
The interceptor missile launched from the Air Force base in Vandenberg, California, "successfully intercepted its target, an intercontinental ballistic missile" launched from the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, the Pentagon said in a statement.
"This system is vital to the defense of our country, and this test proves that we have a deterrent capability with the capacity and credibility to deal with a very real danger," the statement quoted Deputy Director Jim Cering as saying.
The last test of this type of interceptor missiles dates back to 2014, and the day was successful, but three other tests were unsuccessful. All tests were for intercepting slower, intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The Pentagon pointed out that intercepting an intercontinental ballistic missile was "very complex" and was "like a bullet wound."
North Korea is currently conducting tests to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the United States.
