US-backed opposition fighters will announce on Tuesday the date for the start of the final assault on the city of Raqqa with the aim of expelling a supporter from his main stronghold in Syria, the alliance said on Monday.
The Syrian Democratic Forces Alliance includes Kurdish and Arab factions backed by the US-led coalition against Da'ash.
The coalition of the Syrian Democratic Forces said in a statement that it would announce on Tuesday the date of the start of the fifth phase of the campaign to liberate Al-Rigga, which includes an attack on the city.
Over the past week, Syria's democratic forces have advanced until they are a few kilometers from the city after gradually encircling al-Raqqa since last November in a multi-stage attack to expel a hustler from the city he planned to call for attacks on the West.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Syria's democratic forces took control of some of the last few villages to the west of the city on the Euphrates River, about 90 km from the Turkish border.
The attack on al-Raqqa will increase the pressure on the caliphate state, which was declared by a preacher as he faces defeat in the Iraqi city of Mosul and has to retreat through many areas of Syria, where Deir al-Zour is its last major stronghold.
