North Korea fired several surface-to-sea missiles off its eastern coast, local officials said.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that shells were fired Thursday morning from the north Korean port city of Wensan and that the rockets flew about 200 kilometers.
The head of the US Missile Defense Agency said North Korea's technological development in its ballistic missile program over the past six months was "very worrying."
"It is necessary today for the IAEA to assume North Korea's ability to strike the United States with an intercontinental ballistic missile carrying a nuclear war," said senior Navy official James Sering of the House Armed Services Committee.
