Strong winds are feeding a massive deadly fire causing the evacuation of 10,000 people from Knysna South Africa Posted: 08 Jun 2017 12:45 AM PDT Photo algoafm.co.za Up to 10,000 people have been evacuated from Knysna as a result of runaway fires in the area. Evacuations have been carried out in several areas including Brenton, Belvedere and Knysna Heights. Three people have died as a result of the blaze. Officials have described the Knysna fire as the largest and most destructive fire in a built-up area in recent years. The SANDF has been roped in to the area on Thursday morning to assist in quelling the fire. The province's spokesperson James-Brent Styan: "We've been in contact with the SANDF, so they're looking at sending additional resources to the area at first light. Conditions are very tough, The strong wind is making it very difficult to fly helicopters on those conditions." At least 50 properties - including the hostel of Knysna High School - have reportedly been gutted by the blaze which broke out on Tuesday night. A provincial hospital was also evacuated while 15 buses from George were dispatched to Knysna to assist with evacuations. One resident says his home was destroyed in a matter of minutes: "It happened in minutes. The fire was actually a couple of kilometers away and it flew over a hill and caught light on our side of the hill and was on top of us within minutes." NGO's and other groups have also stepped in to help as the fire continues to ravage the region. Knysna municipality's Fran Kirsten: "We have a lot of manpower trying to contain that fire but it has started flaring up in the night. The wind is blowing quite heavily now and that fire is posing a problem at the moment." Home The Wire |
Thousands of fish get 'cooked' in Puget Sound Washington after hot weather claim scientists Posted: 08 Jun 2017 12:01 AM PDT Photo Weatherchannel Thousands of anchovies washed up on the shores of Puget Sound in Washington last week after hot weather over the weekend changed the feeding patterns of the fish, state wildlife officials say. The fish reportedly began to wash up on beaches at Case Inlet near Belfair, Washington, early last week and continued to do so throughout the week, KOMO News reported. "It's sad. It's really sad," resident Kristen Wiseman told KOMO of the THOUSANDS of dead fish scattered on the beach near her home. State fish biologists told the news station the hot weather last weekend prompted the fish to swim closer to the shore to feed on plankton. When the tide went out, the anchovies became trapped and died from a lack of oxygen. "And so now it's lots of fish using up lots of oxygen trapped in shallow rapidly warming water and effectively what happens is the fish get cooked," Dr. Dayv Lowry, a Department of Fish and Wildlife research scientist, told KOMO. According to weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce, temperatures in the area reached the mid-80s over the holiday weekend, which is about 20 degrees warmer than average for the area in late May. The worst winter storm ever hits Cape Town killing 8 affecting millions of people in shanty towns and blowing cars over (video) Posted: 07 Jun 2017 11:19 PM PDT Photo newrelease.co.za Eight people have been killed and thousands forced from their homes as Cape Town and surrounding areas in South Africa were hit by the worst winter storm in ever. The South African Weather Service has warned that the storm is expected to dump more than 50 millimetres of rain in some areas and to trigger waves of up to 12 metres. Millions of people in shanty towns, who have previously had to cope with the region's worst drought in a century, have been hardest hit, as floods and heavy rain washed away their homes. The army, police and other emergency services are on hand to evacuate anyone stranded by the storm and to provide emergency shelter and food. "Eight people have died so far in storm-related incidents and thousands have been displaced," said James-Brent Styan, spokesman for the Western Cape local government ministry. He said in one incident a family of four died in a fire caused by lightning. Another died in a building collapse. Local media reported that strong winds had fanned fires in the countryside east of Cape Town, forcing evacuations including in the popular resort town of Knysna. Over two dozen fires were reported in the area, which are home to dense forests, providing plenty of material for the spread of wild fires. Home The Wire |
Mystery as the magnificent Northern Gannets on Massachusetts' South Shore and Cape Cod are washing up dead or ill have scientists stumped Posted: 07 Jun 2017 10:52 PM PDT Photo fineartamerica.com Wildlife veterinarians have been responding to an unexplained "die-off" of Northern Gannets on Massachusetts' South Shore and Cape Cod. Gannets are washing up on local beaches, seriously ill, or already dead. Scientists are stumped over what can be causing the illness. A wildlife technician with the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates about 100 northern gannets have been affected overall. The New England Wildlife Center (NEWC) has been scrambling to figure out the mystery. NEWC trying to quickly pinpoint the cause because it "is critical to protecting the fragile eco-system on Cape Cod," explained Dr. Greg Mertz, veterinarian and CEO of NEWC on the NEWC website. Staff at the Wild Care center in Eastham says 16 of the 21 gannets brought to the facility have died from the ailment. Necropsies on the birds have so far been inconclusive. The Cape Cod Times reports that local animal hospitals and rehabilitation centers have seen an increase in gannets at their facilities over the past few months. The risk of the disease spreading to other species of birds is a major concern. Local and state organizations are continuing to investigate. With wingspans reaching up to six feet, gannets are known for diving through the water from nearly 130 feet in the air. Officials say the deaths are not going to impact the bird's population.
