WASHINGTON - About 30 million dollars have been stolen from the Malaysian Development Fund (MND), according to judicial documents filed by the US Department of Justice in a civil lawsuit.
The documents indicate that the money was used to buy jewelry for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razzaq's wife, including a necklace with a rare 22-carat pink rosette.
The documents presented by the ministry to a court in Los Angeles on Thursday did not name Abdul Razak or his wife Rosemah Mansour by name, but said jewelry was the wife of Malaysia's No. 1 official.
US and Malaysian government sources have previously said "the number one official" is Abdul Razzaq.
According to the latest documents in the July 2016 case, the Almaz contract was priced at $ 27.3 million alone.
The US Justice Department said on Thursday that senior fund officials and associated individuals had seized more than $ 4.5 billion from the fund set up by Abdul Razzaq in 2009 to support economic development.
The accusations will reinforce the position of political rivals Najib Abdul Razzaq, who often criticize his wife for her lavish life and also come at a critical time for the Malaysian leader, who is expected to call early elections later this year.
Rasmah's assistant did not respond to requests for comment.
The Malaysian Prime Minister's Office said in a statement on Friday that it was concerned to mention specific and unnecessary affairs and individuals, which were only concerned with political exploitation and local interference.
Najib Abdul Razzaq has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing
