A devastating US collision with a Philippine-flagged merchant vessel near the Japanese coast resulted in the injury of three crew members. Earlier, Japanese media reported the loss of seven sailors.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, June 17, southwest of the Japanese city of Yokosuka, about 20 km from the coast, at 2:30 pm (local time).
The US Navy Press Office announced that the Fitzgerald destroyer had been hit by the crash, but was still able to walk.
The US Navy Press Service confirmed that three crew members were injured and evacuated to medical treatment, including the commander of the destroyer, Bryce Benson, who was taken to a US Navy hospital in Yokosuka city.
Japanese television channel NHK reported that seven US sailors had been missing as a result of the collision and could not be contacted, but the US Navy has not confirmed the information yet.
Two DeWay destroyers, two locomotives and a US Navy plane went to the scene. US Naval Forces also went to the Japanese Coast Guard for assistance
