The US Navy announced on Sunday that it had found the bodies of missing sailors since the devastating collision of Fitzgerald with a container ship in flooded rooms on the damaged ship.
The US 7th Fleet said in a statement: "With the arrival of search and rescue personnel to the areas affected by the collision this morning identified the location of the missing sailors."
The statement did not say whether they had found all seven missing crew members, but the Japanese media said the navy had found the bodies of the seven.
The US Navy's 7th Fleet said the accident resulted in undetermined casualties, noting that the Fitzgerald wrecked the AIX Crystal vessel while it was 56 nautical miles southwest of the Japanese city of Yokosuka.
The Japanese Coast Guard rushed to the scene, according to a tweet deployed by the Pacific Fleet's seventh fleet on its Twitter account.
According to the US Navy, a Japanese helicopter contributed to the evacuation of a wounded soldier, indicating that his wounds are so dangerous that they need to be rushed to land.
"The collision resulted in USS Fitzgerald being hit in the water above and below the water line, causing the flow of some water" into the destroyer.
