Forest fires kill 62 people in Portugal

Killing 62 people were killed and about 60 others injured Sunday as a result of violent forest fires in central Portugal, Leiria area, according to authorities.

The fire broke out on June 17 in the afternoon Pedrogaw Grande area in the center of the country, and surrounded a number of fire victims in their cars when they were going on a nearby road.

He said the Portuguese Minister of State for Internal Affairs Jorge Gomez said the death toll had risen to 62 dead and 59 wounded, and that "the fire is spreading on four fronts and violently."

Gomez said that 22 people Tvhmwa in their cars after they found themselves caught fire on the road between Venus and Figuero dos Castaneira de Pera, while others spent 3 suffocated by the smoke of the fire.

The Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa in front of the civil defense headquarters in Lisbon: "Unfortunately, it is without the greatest tragedy we have seen for years at the level of forest fires doubt." Costa noted that "the death toll could rise," adding that "the priority is to save those in danger."

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and went to the scene of the fire and offered his condolences to the families of the victims, "their pain participants on behalf of all them Portuguese."

Portuguese President praised the efforts of firefighters stressing that because of the circumstances, "What has been done is as far as possible."

Involved in the fire about 600 firefighters and 190 vehicles, where they were working throughout the night of Saturday to Sunday to fight the fire.

The Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, the EU's readiness to provide assistance to the Portuguese authorities in the fight against fires.
