With the protection lists publicized yesterday, there was a lot of focus on Marc Methot, but perhaps the more intriguing omission from the Senators protection list was that of Bobby Ryan.

I would suggest that the Senators' protection list openly indicates that they would rather lose the high paid winger and get out from under his contract. What other explanation would you give for protecting Ryan Dzingel (or Zack Smith & Gabriel Pageau for that matter) over Ryan.

I think it is painfully obvious that the playoff performance wasn't enough to change management's mind and dangling Ryan in front of Vegas is plan A in removing the remaining 5 years and $37.25M from the books.

And, they might get their wish. Looking at the protection lists and the available players, there are a lot of defensemen who would be the best option for the Golden Knights to select, and not so many forwards who can do what Ryan is supposed to do - score goals.

Ryan is also a big name, an American player with a marketable story, despite his struggles of the past couple of seasons, and could be the biggest name on the Golden Knights roster.

As I said before the protected lists were released that Methot's biggest plus is the way he is a foil for Erik Karlsson, and Vegas certainly won't have an Erik Karlsson on their roster any time soon. He would be a nice addition, but more valuable to the Senators than the Golden Knights.
