We finish up the 16/17 Islander report cards this week as we have only two players left. Today we focus on Nikolay Kulemin. Kulemin was dropped down to the new fourth line this year and when all were healthy he saw time with Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck. Kuli appeared in seventy-two games for the New York Islanders and he record twelve goals and eleven assists which was good for twenty three points.

These are great numbers for a fourth line player, however Kulemin’s four million dollar cap hit drags down his grade. Kulemin is a solid well rounded forward, who is good in his own end and drives possession. However, his contract is just too much money for twenty-three points. If Kulemin was making two million, everyone would love his overall season but in a cap era, your cap hit and production are now linked.

I like Nikolay Kulemin’s game. He is an important cog to the bottom six forwards on this team. With that being said you just want more bang for the buck. We know he isn’t going to score thirty goals again but ten to twelve more points would be helpful. This is my last grade on the roster and I have decided to give Kule a B-.

As for the protection list, I was told that the Islanders list of protected players is specific in design. It has been reported that a deal for the expansion draft is in place and the Isles will be able to shield some more players from possibly being drafted. Also I was told the reason why you see some players protected that may make you shake your head is because Vegas and the Isles are talking trade over someone who has been left unprotected by another team.

Honestly, I don’t want to get into this too much as this is all one hundred percent speculation. We will not know about any deals until we get to the actual expansion draft on Wednesday night. Once the dust settles we can then put Garth Snows decisions under the microscope.
