North Korea's economy is growing, ignoring sanctions

    11:54 - 21/07/2017

North Korea's economy grew last year at the fastest pace in 17 years, despite sanctions imposed on Pyongyang by the international community.

North Korea's real GDP in 2016 rose 3.9 percent from a year earlier, the highest level since 1999, when the economic growth rate was 6.1 percent.

North Korea's economic growth rate last year was 2.8 percent higher than the South Korean average for the first time in eight years.

North Korea's economy is stronger than in Estonia, Latvia and Paraguay, but less than in Cameroon and Libya.

North Korea's annual per capita national income is estimated at 1.46 million won ($ 1.3 billion), accounting for 4.6 percent of South Korea's gross national income per capita.

Growth in the mining sector was 8.4%, with coal production increasing. Electricity, gas and water supplies grew 22.3% in North Korea last year.

Although the international community imposed sanctions on North Korea, its foreign trade reached $ 6.55 billion last year, up 4.7 percent from a year earlier.

North Korea's exports rose 4.6 percent to $ 2.82 billion, while imports rose 4.8 percent to $ 3.73 billion.
