Stop the deportation of 1400 Iraqis from America

    Release date: 2017/7/25

A federal judge in the state of Michigan has suspended the deportation of more than 1,400 Iraqi citizens from the United States, a decision considered the latest legal victory for Iraqi citizens facing deportation in an exciting case.
On Monday, Judge Mark Goldsmith issued a preliminary injunction made by lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union, who said immigrants would face persecution in Iraq because they were ethnic and religious minorities there.
Goldsmith said the court order allows Iraqis time to challenge their deportation before federal courts.
He added that many of them conducted a "heated search for legal aid" after the US government unexpectedly revoked orders to expel them after several years.
Goldsmith said the extra time ensured that "those people who may be seriously hurt and possibly die will not be taken out of this country before taking their full chance before the courts."
