The S & P 500 index was down on negative earnings reports from major companies such as Amazon, Exxon, Starbucks and tobacco stocks.
But the Dow Jones industrial average posted a third straight closing high, supported by Chevron's gains after the energy company announced its results.
The Dow Jones ended the Wall Street trading session up 33.76 points, or 0.15 percent, at 21,830.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 3.32 points, or 0.13 percent, to close unofficially at 2,472.10.
