Trump and Abe vow to increase pressure on North Korea

US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to increase economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea.

During a conversation with Abe on North Korea's launch of a ballistic missile, Trump said Pyongyang's missile program was a serious and growing threat, according to a White House statement.

The two leaders agreed that 'North Korea poses a serious threat to the United States, Japan, the Republic of Korea (South) and other countries close and far away,' the statement said.

"Trump and Abe reaffirmed their commitment to increasing economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea," he said.

Trump reiterated "the United States' commitment to defend Japan and South Korea against any attack; using the full capabilities of the United States."

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un boasted that entire US territory was in the range of Pyongyang missiles after an intercontinental ballistic missile test was launched on Friday.

Military experts say the missile could reach as far as the east coast of the United States, such as New York, depending on the size of the cargo, in a development that poses a major challenge to Trump, according to GulfOnline.

In response to the missile test, two US bombers, along with South Korean and Japanese fighter jets, participated in military exercises over which they flew over the Korean Peninsula.

The exercise was followed by a successful US test on Sunday of a missile interceptor system Washington is seeking to deploy on the Korean Peninsula.
