Controversial suggestion by Iraqi transport minister
    4:54 AM ADMIN

Baghdad/ Iraq TradeLink: The local news that covered the Iraqi intention to "return" to Algiers' agreement made between ex-president Saddam Hussein and Shah Pahlavi is expected to stir different contradictory views inside the country.

Iraqi Transport Minister Kadhim al-Hamami suggested to the Iranian defence minister Hussein Dahqan the return to the border agreement signed in 1975, amid reports that the Iranian side agreed to that in principle, but should be referred to the Iranian foreign ministry.

Algiers agreement was signed on 6 March, 1975 between Iran and Iraq under the patronage of the Algerian government.

Borders disputes between the two countries were among the problems that stirred conflicts during the ages, particularly in modern Iraq.

In 1975, Saddam Hussein tried to terminate the armed conflict with the Kurds, so he signed the
agreement to cut off Iranian support for the Kurds.

No comment was made by the Iraqi government on this suggestion.
