China officially opened its first military base in Djibouti on Tuesday at a ceremony in which the flag of China was lifted, state media reported.
The opening of the base coincided with the 90th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army. According to Reuters.
The opening of the base has raised fears in India because of Djibouti's geographic location in the Horn of Africa on the northwestern border of the Indian Ocean. India fears that Djibouti will become a new military ally of China in the so-called "pearl chain" alongside Bangladesh, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
China began planning the construction of a military base in Djibouti last year to be used to supply naval vessels involved in peacekeeping and relief missions off the coast of Yemen and Somalia.
The military base is China's first naval base outside its borders, despite Beijing's assertions that it is only a logistics base.
More than 300 people attended the opening ceremony of the military base, including Tian Zhong, deputy commander of the Chinese fleet and Djibouti's defense minister, state radio said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently overseeing an army modernization program that includes developing the army's capabilities to operate far from the country's borders.
There is speculation in diplomatic circles that China will build similar military bases in Pakistan, for example, but the Chinese government denies this.
