    The proportion of immigrants in Germany sets a new record

    In recent years the number of refugees in Germany has increased to 22.5% of the country's total population.

    According to data from the German Federal Statistics Office, which was prepared on the basis of the 2016 census, some 18.6 million people now live in Germany as immigrants. The index rose 8.5% year-on-year to a new record.

    The number of those fleeing the fighting in Africa and the Middle East increased by 46% and 51%, respectively, compared to 2011, according to the bureau.

    According to these figures, 2.3 million people living in Germany have roots in the Middle East and about 740,000 people of African origin.

    The figures come ahead of the September general election, amid warnings from the Social Democrats against German Chancellor Angela Merkel to repeat what happened in 2015 when the German chancellor opened her country to absorb hundreds of thousands of immigrants.
