The United States announced it had expelled two Cuban diplomats in May after unspecified "accidents" that caused symptoms of American patients working in Havana, including hearing loss.
US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauwert said Wednesday that the nature of the incidents was unclear, but that Americans working in Cuba had returned to the United States for "health reasons" that posed no threat to life.
She said the United States learned about it in late 2016.
"We have no firm answers to the source or reason of what we consider to be incidents," she said, adding: "A number of physical symptoms have emerged on these American citizens working for the US government.
As a result, on May 23, the United States asked two Cuban officials in Washington to leave the country, which they had already abandoned, according to Nauret.
