US Defense Secretary: Need for military option for conflict with North Korea

WASHINGTON - US Defense Secretary James Matisse said on Friday that there was a military option for a conflict with North Korea but acknowledged that his country favored a diplomatic solution because any war with Pyongyang would be disastrous.

"There are military options to find solutions to the conflict with North Korea, but the United States prefers a diplomatic solution to this situation," Matisse said, adding that "we are ready to provide a military solution to the DPRK issue for the DPRK."

The US defense secretary also acknowledged that "any war with North Korea would be disastrous." "The US efforts to resolve the crisis with Pyongyang now focus on diplomacy and the US effort is driven through diplomacy, and it gives results and I want to keep this dynamic," he said.

This came at a time when US President Donald Trump said that "his threat to North Korea with anger and fire may not have been harsh enough."

"The threat of the US military base on the Pacific island of Guam will not go unpunished by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un," Trump said.
