UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric on Wednesday called on Saudi authorities to respect humanitarian law and international law in connection with the events in Awamiya.

"We have seen media reports on the subject, but at the same time we would like to recall that any steps taken by the Saudi authorities must be in line with their obligations under international humanitarian law," Dujarric told a news conference.

"Our appeal to the local authorities means that in any case it must comply with international law, that is, international human rights must be respected and the law must be followed," he said.

Human rights groups have accused the Saudi authorities of committing massacres against the people in the region for no apparent reason
