China imposes ban on importing products from North Korea

    14/08/2017

The Chinese government on Monday imposed a ban on the import of goods from North Korea in a move to pressure Pyongyang over ballistic missile launches.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said that as of Aug. 15, the government imposed a total ban on the import of coal, sea products, iron and other minerals from North Korea.

Beijing's decision came in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2371. The sanctions aim to deter Pyongyang from conducting nuclear and missile tests.

North Korea's exports to China, especially coal, are the backbone of North Korea's economy. China's imports from North Korea, according to Itc Trade Map last year, were about $ 2.5 billion.

Recent geopolitical tensions have increased over the Korean Peninsula, especially after the United States and North Korea exchanged threats. Pyongyang has vowed to target Washington in a number of areas, including Guam, which was angered by US President Donald Trump, .
