Saudi Arabia: Iranian pilgrims visit Baqi shrine under special security supervision

Arabic and International   Wednesday, 16 August 2017

    Baghdad / Sky Press: m

The Saudi authorities did not issue any official statements to resolve the controversy over allowing Iranian pilgrims to visit the tomb of Al-Baqeea, but a member of the Hajj and Umrah Committee at Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry Saad Al-Qurashi explained that the Kingdom does not differentiate between Iranian pilgrims or other pilgrims visiting religious sites During the pilgrimage season, stressing that Saudi Arabia does not impose any restrictions on pilgrims on its territory.

Baqi is one of the measures on the extent of the Saudi-Iranian rapprochement. The more political relations between the two countries are strained, the more obvious the visitation of Iranian pilgrims, while the restrictions are lessened during periods of calm and mediation attempts.

Qureshi's statement comes at a time when controversy has raged over allowing Iranian pilgrims to visit the Bekaa cemetery in Madinah, despite the absence of any official statements from the Saudi Hajj and Umrah Committee on this matter.

An Iraqi official had asked Saudi Arabia to allow Iranian pilgrims to visit al-Baqi, a move that would ease tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Saad al-Qurashi, in a telephone interview with "Haft Post Arab", said that Iranian pilgrims are allowed to visit al-Baqi, like other pilgrims of other nationalities. However, the visit of Iranian pilgrims to the site is subject to security supervision, to prevent any practice of "doctrinal rituals that may violate the laws." Its expression.

He added that Iranian pilgrims had not been prevented from visiting the site before.

Qureshi said that many Iranian pilgrims resorted to "some abusive acts" towards some graves of companions, who were buried in the cemetery, throwing stones, according to their sectarian beliefs.

He stressed that these things are keen to avoid the Saudi authorities during the pilgrimage season, "the visit is allowed, but it is done according to special controls."

Al-Qurashi denied the authenticity of the images circulated by the social networks, which show people who are said to be Iranian pilgrims, carrying signs with Shiite slogans in the cemetery of Baqi.
