Germany: Turkey will not join the European Union under Erdogan

    25/08/2017

German Foreign Minister Zygmar Gabriel said on Thursday that Turkey would never become a member of the European Union as long as it was ruled by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accusing him of not taking the EU accession talks seriously.
Gabriel's comments came in an interview with the Bild newspaper and are likely to further strain relations between the two NATO member countries after Erdogan urged Germans of Turkish origin to boycott the main parties in next month's general elections..
"It is clear that in this case, Turkey will never become a member of the European Union," Gabriel said"He said.
"This is not because we do not want them, but because the Turkish government and Erdogan are running away from all that Europe is defending"He said.
EU leaders have criticized Erdogan's campaign against the opposition before and after a failed military coup in July last year. Talks to join the bloc have virtually ceased even though Turkey remains a candidate for membership.
