German Foreign Minister Zygmar Gabriel expressed his belief that Turkey would not be able to join the European Union under the current government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"It does not mean that we do not want to join them, but the Turkish government under Erdogan is rapidly moving in the opposite direction to what Europe represents, and it is quite clear that Turkey in the current situation will not become a member of the European Union," Gabriel said in an interview with Bild newspaper.
For his part, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurtz announced earlier that Ankara could not join the European Union until 2023, when the 100th anniversary of the founding of modern Turkey will be celebrated.
