An urgent meeting of the Security Council will be held Tuesday in New York at the request of Tokyo and Washington after Pyongyang fired a missile over Japan, diplomatic sources said.
According to Agence France Presse, the call comes after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump agreed to "escalate the pressure on North Korea," Abe said.
"We must immediately hold an emergency meeting at the United Nations and increase pressure on North Korea," Abe said in Tokyo after a 40-minute phone call with the US president.
According to the Japanese prime minister, Trump reiterated "the 100% strong commitment of the United States and its ally Japan" after this "unprecedented threat".
Abe also stressed the important role of China and Russia in urging North Korea to "change its policy."
The South Korean army and the Japanese government announced earlier Tuesday that North Korea had fired a missile over Japan in a context of tension between Washington and Pyongyang.
The South Korean General Staff said in a statement that the "extruder of an unspecified type" was launched from Pyongyang at 05.57 local time (20.57 GMT Monday), indicating that the projectile was launched eastward and shaved "over" Japan .
"South Korea and the United States are jointly analyzing the details" of the projectile launch.
Kyodo news agency reported that the North Korean missile apparently penetrated Japan's airspace.
Prime Minister Yoshihid Soja said the missile posed a "serious and serious threat to Japan's security".
The missile was fired over the island of Hokkaido (north) and later landed in the waters of the Pacific, 1180 kilometers east of the Japanese coast, without causing damage to aircraft or ships anchored in the area, the Japanese authorities said.
The Pentagon said North Korea had fired a missile at Japan, but said it was not a threat to North America.
North Korea fired three short-range missiles on the Sea of Japan on Saturday as tens of thousands of US and South Korean troops took part in maneuvers on the Korean Peninsula.
But North Korea's launch on Tuesday was an escalation by Pyongyang, which recently threatened to target the US island of Guam.
